Aux jours inoubliables

FRANÇAIS / ENGLISH
Nouveau livre photo “Aux jours inoubliables” de Gaël Bonnefon.
+

New photobook “Aux jours inoubliables” (Unforgettable Days) by Gaël Bonnefon.
+
Afternoon of eternity, magic rituals, moments of extreme lucidity, luxuriant landscapes; a lost kingdom emerges. The missing pictures, an invisible seam, give breath. “Aux jours inoubliables” asks what our common dreams are to become.
+
“Aux jours inoubliables” is a book composed of hypothetical missing images and blank pages. Instead of highlighting the “Unforgettable” the book emphasizes on “Forgetting”. Only when we forget do we seem to remember.

D Y S N O M I A

A photographic journey to the limits of our perceptions, DYSNOMIA paints a world where the infinitely small is immensity, where forests are made of the same material as the stars and where fire dances with the shadows of men. Alexandre Dupeyron probes the secret substance of things, constantly moving and elusive, in order to lead us beyond what they seem to be.

DYSNOMIA, between music score and film editing

The book is thought in a cinematic and musical way. Each picture is a note of an analog score between photography and sound. Taking up the cinematographic processes, each image can give way to a loop of pictures, forming a rhythm where interstitial images appear.

The images all have the same treatment and take up the idea of the 35mm film format. DYSNOMIA thus reveals several facets, where content and form converse.

Through its materiality, the Japanese binding allows the front and back pages to be linked in a continuity that recalls that of the film.

The sound usually encoded at the bottom of the film also appears on the back of the images, the words become sound waves.

Odysseus – l’Autre monde

Odysseus - The Other World

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

The Odyssey is the story of a man driven both by the desire to return home and by an insatiable curiosity that leads him to make detours, to meet others and discover the world. Ulysses holds both ends of his desire, at the cost of ten years of wandering. At the end of the road it is himself he discovers. If this ancient story still speaks to us, it is because it deals with current issues: identity, otherness, hospitality

Michaël Duperrin goes to the supposed places of Ulysses’ wanderings. The photographer travels through multiple layers, between here and elsewhere, now and yesterday, reality and fiction, in search of echoes between mythical past and present reality. The experiment will last ten years, the time it takes Ulysses to find Ithaca.

Odysseus, the Other World traces the first part of this Odyssey, and immerses us in the world of gods, monsters, infernos and sirens. The photographs are printed in cyanotype, one of the first photographic printing processes, which owes its name to its colour. Whereas we see the Mediterranean sea and its intense blue sky, the word “blue” does not exist in Homer’s language. The adjective that would later designate a dark blue refers in the Odyssey to the world of the Night and Hells, that is, to the Other World.

Noces ou les confins sauvages

Noces or the borders of wilderness

President Hotel (sold out)

President Hotel, Vietnam, Saigon: A city within the city

An imposing structure built for the U.S. army in the 1970’s, the President Hotel was for many years the biggest and most modern building in Saigon. After the U.S. Army left, up to 2’500 Vietnamese people once lived in it.
Witness to the history of Vietnam over the last half a century, this decaying architectural skeleton will soon be destroyed to leave room for modern towers and malls, turning forever the page of History. Time runs layer after layer in this building. Its dilapidated walls hold signs of a past lives, visually inspiring memories and elucidate moods and emotion. The fragments of the last inhabitants’ lives seem frozen in time; and yet, in the hallways, shadows play games, re-animating the past.

Laurent Weyl’s photos capture the essence of the President Hotel, casting a poetic eye on the last tenants who occupy it and the history reflected in the building. Here we discover a microcosm that bears witness to the last fifty years of Vietnamese history.

The book contains 80 images and two texts, each one revealing a facet of the President Hotel’s life, which has been destructed by the time the book was published.

Laurent Weyl, internationally celebrated photo-journalist, received two prizes in 2014 for the photographs contained in this book:
– The « Prix documentaire VIPA » (Vienna International Photo Award), professional category
– “Noticed portfolio” for the Scam Roger Pic. Prize.

Hayastan
