The Eclipse offre un panorama de photographies de Stéphane Charpentier en noir et blanc argentique, captées au fil d’une décennie en Grèce, pays reflet d’un monde plongé dans des crises économiques, politiques, humaines. Mais plus qu’un documentaire ou un essai intime, The Eclipse révèle différents niveaux de lecture et de sens. Le livre combine des images poétiques d’une humanité en souffrance, avec une iconographie à la fois symbolique et onirique, quasi métaphysique. Des interludes composés de mosaïques de tirages rephotographiés évoquent cette densité et ce chaos contemporains, alors que la dernière séquence d’images ouvre sur des espaces naturels, vierges et éblouissants, d’où jaillit enfin toute la lumière.
Les textes en anglais et en français sont des transcriptions de dialogues enregistrés et forment un fond sonore sur ce présent déchiré entre lutte et espoir.
Stéphane Charpentier mène un travail photographique existentiel poétique en N&B argentique. Il tisse une oeuvre au long cours, diffusée depuis près d’une vingtaine d’années en France et à l’international. Il est représenté par la Galerie Françoise Besson à Lyon. Il réalise également des films expérimentaux et est le commissaire des projets collectifs Temps Zero (image et son).
Sa photographie, sombre et lumineuse, à vif et dépouillée de tout artifice de séduction, nous met face aux dualités des rapports humains comme à nos dualités propres. Photographe à fleur de peau et à fleur du monde, Stéphane Charpentier accomplit une oeuvre au noir qui fait jaillir et exalte d’incandescentes clartés. (Caroline Bénichou)
The Eclipse offers a panorama of analog black and white photographs from Stéphane Charpentier, taken over a decade in Greece, a country reflecting a world plunged into economic, political, and human crises. Beyond documentary or an intimate essay, The Eclipse suggests layered readings. The book combines poetic images of suffering humanity with an iconography at once symbolic and oneiric, quasi-metaphysical. Interludes of mosaics of prints evoke the density of contemporary chaos, while the final sequences open onto natural, virgin and dazzling spaces, from where at last, springs light.
The texts, in French and English, are transcriptions of recorded dialogs, a lingering sonic echo to this present, torn between struggle and hope.
Stéphane Charpentier carries out a poetic, existential photographic work in black and white film. His oeuvre is shaped through a long term process, working in France and internationally for nearly twenty years. He is represented by the Françoise Besson Gallery in Lyon. He also makes experimental movies and is the artistic curator of the collective project Temps Zero (image and sound).
His photography, somber and luminous, raw and stripped of any artifice of enticement, confronts us with the dualities between human relations and within ourselves. A photographer who reacts with an edgy hypersensitivity to the world, Stéphane Charpentier creates an oeuvre from darkness that bursts with incandescent clarity. (Caroline Bénichou)

To celebrate the fifth anniversary of sun/sun publishing house, we collaborate with TIND. extraordinaire, maestro silk screen printer based in Athens.
They realized five different silkscreen prints, based on pictures of five of our authors.
